Every American Atheist Needs: The Party of Reason and Progress

Party of Reason and ProgressI know I haven’t posted anything about my reaction to the US election yet, but rest assured that’s coming in the form of a Common Heathens podcast sometime this week. Mr. Oz and I will be releasing an election special – it’s been slightly delayed but it should be out this week.

In the meantime, I want you to check out my favourite reaction to Trump’s presidential win, the Party of Reason and Progress. Now officially a non-profit organization, PORP’s mission statement reads,

The Party of Reason and Progress (PORP) is an organization dedicated to promoting reason, the scientific method, and empirically sound decision-making in modern politics. Our mission is to implement effective and rational policies through supporting reasonable and logical public officials and initiatives.

David G. McAfee is the brains behind this operation, having originally begun PORP in 2010. Since then, it’s been relatively dormant until just this past week when Donald J. was elected Orange Fella¬†in Chief. McAfee booted the party back up again and in just a few short days the Facebook page has collected nearly 15,000 likes.

I know that sometimes it feels like getting active is futile, but you have to understand that a democracy isn’t really much of a democracy unless the people participate. Take advantage of what so many people have died for. Get involved, have your say and steer your country in the direction you want it to go. I know how many atheists, free thinkers, secularists and humanists there are out there – if each of you supported this party wholeheartedly, your country would have to take notice. You might actually get somewhere.

Your democracy runs on numbers. You are one of those. Make sure your number counts for what you believe in.

Has the Party of Reason & Progress reasoned out how a group of individuals can delegate rights which none of them possess to a representative, or do they hold to superstition?
